It happens often. A first-time buyer goes out to look at properties and, after exploring all the options, finds the one. Thinking they want a second-opinion before making such a big decision, the buyer seeks out wisdom from trusted relatives and friends. They are hoping for affirmation on their decision.
Frequently, the response from these trusted advisors is underwhelming. Why?
Through the process of looking at multiple properties over a period of time, the buyer has become educated about the market. They now know what they can expect to find in their preferred location and price range.
On the other hand, the trusted relatives and friends of the first-time buyer have not received the same education. They have no frame of reference by which to judge the selected property.
These relatives and friends might be older, wiser, and experienced in real estate, but they most likely cannot give a fair, confident opinion on the buyer’s choice without being a part of the earlier process.
My solution to this common problem? Bring your advisors with you!
As much as you are able, bring those who will have a significant influence on your decision-making along for the ride. They should view as many properties with you as possible.
By doing so, you and your advisors will have the same information. When you ask their opinion, their response will more likely be: “Yes! We see why you are choosing this property as opposed to the others we’ve viewed.” They will feel confident in supporting your decision and you can value their informed opinion. It’s a win and an all-around positive experience for everyone involved!
Now, gather your advisors and let’s go house-hunting!
