After a long year plus of great change, maybe you’re not ready to take a trip by plane, but you need to get out of the house for some fresh air and sunshine.
Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is the perfect day trip combining a change of scenery with the unique Chesapeake Bay region eco-system. It’s located on the Eastern shore in Dorchester County near Cambridge. While the visitor center is currently open from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on the weekends, the Wildlife Drive and trails are open from dawn until dusk every day.
The Refuge was established in 1933 as a waterfowl sanctuary for birds migrating along the Atlantic Flyway. It is home to the largest breeding population of American bald eagles on the East Coast, north of Florida.
Once you enter the Refuge, there are several ways to enjoy the wildlife and the views. With four walking trails, three water trails and an auto tour route (Wildlife Drive), the refuge is known for its wildlife observation and photography opportunities.
After taking in some nature, head over to the Water’s Edge Grill at the Hyatt Regency or check out one of the locally owned restaurants in the old town section of Cambridge. You’re sure to return home feeling relaxed and refreshed!
